International Symposium on Conservation and Sustainable Development
of Marine Resources in the Developing World
Alexandria, Egypt, 29 November to 1st December 1998

The department of Oceanography of the University of Alexandria will commemorate the 50th Anniversary of its foundation in 1998, the year declared by the United Nations as the International Year of the Ocean upon the initiative of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) and UNESCO. Coinciding together both events will be celebrated by the Department and its graduates in December 1998 by holding an International Symposium which will bring together Marine Scientists together with graduates from the Department. The theme of the Symposium is "Conservation and Sustainable Development of Marine Resources in the Developing World".

In addition to  the marine science community, the Symposium Organizers encourage the participation of planers, policy issues and marine science applications, such as marine pollution, integrated coastal management, fishery technology and other technologies, coastal protection.

Symposium objectives

• to promote awareness in the developing countries of the importance of protecting the ocean and its resources
• to elaborate policies and practices leading to sustainable integrated coastal management, particularly in areas threatened by rapid growth in human activities
• to review present and future trends in marine science teaching and research and to create channels for future co-operation
• to assess prospects of international co-operation as we enter the 21st century
