- National Events -
Indian National Federation of UNESCO Clubs and Associations (150 national
clubs) organised different activities celebrating the IYO
- UNESCO Literacy Resource Centre organised a test for Secondary School students on
Ocean (10 000 children participated)
- Guntur UNESCO Club (A.P) conducted a seminar for University students (nearly 100
students
- Byndoor UNESCO Club (Karnataka) organised a spot painting competition for
children on the topic "save ocean". They have collected some funds and given the
gold medal.
- SDM UNESCO Club (Karnataka), this village have given a Radio and TV programme on
ocean.
Various activities conducted on ocean:
- TV Quiz Programme on Ocean was telecast for University students on 31st
December 1997.
- Slogan Contest on Ocean, 500 slogans have been published in the "Compiled
Slogans on Ocean"
- Two seminars on Ocean at Mangalore with nearly 80 delegates
- Essay competition for University students on the theme "Mountains Divide;
Ocean Unite"
- Painting competition on ocean for the school children of below 12 years of age
- Signing of the Ocean Charter - The Ocean Charter
is proposed to be signed by the President of India. The Department of Ocean Development
(DOD) is coordinating to organize a function either during March-April or October-November
1998.
- Issue of Commemorative Stamps - A set of
commemorative philatelic stamps is planned to be released on the theme prescribed by IOC.
Themes for the stamps will be chosen from 'Ocean and Climate', 'Ocean and food', 'Ocean
and pollution', 'Ocean and youth', 'Ocean and technology', 'Ocean and wildlife', 'Ocean
and Archaeology'. DOD has already approached the Department of posts for this.
- Newspapers - On 1st January 1998 information
was published in the 'Hindustan Times, 'Indian Express' and 'Times of India' on 'India
Celebrates International Year of the Ocean 1998'.
- Bringing out Special Supplements in the Newspapers
- A special supplement would be brought out around 15 August 1998
(Independence Day of India), highlighting the role of ocean as a common heritage of
mankind and its importance in shaping the quality of life. The editors of the established
national and regional newspapers will be approached for this.
- Public Awareness - The DOD has placed an order
with the Department of Posts for printing 2 million 'Inland Letters' carrying the message
of the IYO. (PHOTO)
- Special Lecturers - Special lectures are
proposed to be arranged by eminent Oceanographers.
- TV/Radio talks/discussions - All India Radio and Doordarshan (Television) will be approached for
organizing popular informative talks/discussions and other programmes on the occasion.
- Handing over of IYO flag -
- Dr. I. Oliounine, Deputy Executive Secretary IOC handed over the IYO flag
to the Secretary of the Department of Ocean Development on 6th February 1998 (PHOTO)
- the 1998 International Year of the Ocean flag was handed over to the
Captain of the Oceanographic Research Vessel Sangar Kanya at Goa on 16 February 1998 (PHOTO)
- Children - In order to create awareness among
school children about oceanographic research, the ORV Sagar Kanya organized an 'open door
day' on 26th January 1998. More than 2000 school children visited the vessel on that day.
- International events -
- EXPO'98 at Lisbon - The Department of Ocean
Development will participate in the Lisbon EEXPO98, the main theme of which is 'The Oceans
- A heritage for the future'. About 28 sqm has been booked for depicting the activities of
the Department including the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT). The
participation of the Department will highlight the achievements in Antarctic Research,
Polymetallic Nodules Programme, Coastal Ocean Monitoring and Prediction System (COMAPS),
Ocean Observation and Information Services (OOIS), etc. The participation of NIOT will be
in the form of displays of working models one wave energy and a remotely operated vehicle.
- ORV Sagar Kanya Ocean Cruise - As part of the
Indian involvement in the 1998 IYO, ORV Sagar kanya will be deployed for the INDOEX
programme in which India, Germany, France, Netherlands and Sweden and participating. The
objective is to study the aerosol characteristics and their optical effects over the ocean
regions. The programme is intended to be carried out in three phases comprising of INDOEX
pre campaigns, a field phase and a final phase. Two pre-INDOEX campaigns have already been
carried out on-board ORV Sagar Kanya during 1996 (cruise No 109) and 1997 (cruise No 120).
The field phase of the programme is planned for 45 days (sailed off February 19, 1998) for
which ORV Sagar Kanya will be utilized. Field data on radiation and aerosol chemistry and
flu measurements over the tropical Indian Ocean along the sector Goa-Port Louis will be
collected during the cruise with port calls at Male and Port Louis
- Launching of Ocean Satellite - Launching of
ocean satellite with Ocean Colour Monitor in the year 1998 would be dedicated to the IYO.
- Launching of Data Buoys - The launching of data
buoys in the coastal and offshore water of the Arabian Sea for operating the Ocean
Observation Network from the Oceanographic Research Vessel, Sagar Kanya on 26th January
1998 (Republic Day of India) was dedicated to the IYO.
- Organizing Workshops Seminars-
- International seminar on the Indian Ocean in the 21st Century : Linkages &
Networking. Held in Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi, 9-10 February 1998
- Workshop for Port and Harbor Designers (featuring Computer Modeling Techniques,
Ship Cruise Measurements). Held in Chennai, India, hosted by National Institute for Ocean
Technology (NIOT), between 23 and 27 February 1998.
- Workshop on NIOT-Industry Interaction, Held at NIOT on 3rd March 1998
