Initiative Ocean

Surfrider Foundation   Europe

Introduction

The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO was invited to participate at the "Salon de la protection du littoral et de l'environnement" from 4-6 June 1999 as a follow-up action to the International Year of the Ocean. It was the first Environmental Exhibition implemented in that region. The success of the 3 days of exhibition met the IYO objective which is to increase public awareness of the need to protect the ocean and its environment.

Main results

• 120 signatures of My Ocean Charter including the one of Bixente Lizarazou (French football player)
• a large demand of information and documentation from general public and students
• thousands of visitors
