In a few words... The purpose of the "Save the Beaches" project is to have students collaborate as they discover ways to take responsibility for their environment. It is also hoped that they will begin to realize the interdependencies that exist across the globe. They will understand the we are a world community, each of us depends on the others in a quest to keep our planet healthy. Students visit local beaches, do a beech sweep, analyze and categorize the litter. They then share the data with the participating schools. Through graphs and discussions they reach conclusions based on what was found. They are challenged to develop practical ways to eliminate one piece of litter. Thus, they can see a direct relationship between the solution to the problem and their own actions. In accordance with the United Nations initiatives planned for the 1998 International Year of the Ocean, and in collaboration with the Symposium on Marine Pollution sponsored by UNEP, IOC and IMO, the 'Save the Beaches' project will be organized for the 5th time. We believe that it will collaborate with the IYO effort through education of hundreds (maybe millions?) of students around the world. Every year, over 22 schools around the world organize a 'clean day' and exchange information and solutions to environmental problems. Contact
