June 8-World Oceans' Day
Press event -
(In collaboration with the EXPO Oceanarium at EXPO '98, Lisbon, Portugal)
Unveiling of WWF & IUCN's global marine conservation strategy and call for marine Gifts to the Earth-significant conservation actions and commitments that have been made by governments and businesses with the assistance of WWF and its partner organizations.   The Gift of the Turkish government - the recent declaration of 5 new protected areas for monk seals will be celebrated at this event.  WWF has been campaigning for this action for nearly three years, and the announcement is an extremely positive step for this endangered species, which is threatened by a range of problems highlighted in the WWF/IUCN marine strategy.

INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF THE SEA
Portsmouth. WWF attendance to be confirmed.

September 14-15:
Marine Fish Conservation Conference
Lisbon, EXPO '98. "Creating a Sea Change: Resolving the Global Fisheries Crisis" will be the theme of this two-day, international gathering of fisheries stakeholders, including representatives from government, industry and the environmental community.  WWF plans to release a report on the impacts of northern fishers on southern fisheries, and to issue a declaration based on the recommendations from the conference.
