Dear Colleagues,

As you know the Sixth Session of the IOC-WMO-UNEP Committee for Global Ocean Observing System (I-GOOS-VI) will be held in Paris, France between 10 and 14 March 2003. As a member of I-GOOS you recently received the letter of invitation.

You may also be interested to know that the 17th Session of the IOC Committee on International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE) will be held the previous week, ie between 3 and 7 March 2003, also in Paris, France.

The cooperation between IODE and GOOS has substantially increased in recent years. As you know the IODE Chair participates in the I-GOOS Sessions and IODE also participated actively in the First GOOS Capacity Building Panel earlier this year. JCOMM offers another important opportunity for IODE and GOOS to closely collaborate. At IODE we believe that the 4 decades of experience and expertise in oceanographic data and information management can be extremely beneficial to GOOS and at IODE-XVI the IODE Committee therefore welcomed close GOOS-IODE cooperation.

IODE now faces many challenges, as does GOOS. These include, inter alia the growing diversity in data types (and following from that, the need for standards and QC), the growing number of sensors and platforms, the need for better cooperation with the operational oceanography and marine science communities, the need to adapt to (or develop) new information and communication technologies providing faster and better services to a growing user community.

We would therefore like to invite members of the I-GOOS to also participate in IODE-XVII to really ensure that GOOS and IODE can develop their data and information management activities in a complementary and mutually beneficial way.
