OPERATIONAL OCEANOGRAPHY FEATURES
IN LATEST ISSUE OF "OCEANOGRAPHY",
THE OFFICIAL MAGAZINE OF THE OCEANOGRAPHY SOCIETY

This special 2003 issue - Ocean Observations, vol. 16, No.4 - contains several good articles, including a detailed one about the New Jersey OOS, entitled "Observing the Oceans from the COOL Room: our History, Experience and Opinions". It is by Scott Glen and Oscar Schofield, from Rutgers University, New Brunswick. The authors describe how they formed a regional ocean observing system, how they got it funded, what it does for users, and how they are managing to maintain it for the longer term. There are important lessons here for all GOOS Regional Alliances, and indeed for all national GOOS bodies. If you are not a member of TOS, you may be able to get a copy of the article from Scott Glen (glen@imcs.rutgers.edu).

This issue reminds me to encourage you to join THE OCEANOGRAPHY SOCIETY (for information go to info@tos.org). Back issues of most of the journals are available. They make good reading. Membership is US$50 per year starting from 1 October. Don't delay - join today!
