    AARSE Conference

The 5th African Association of Remote Sensing of the Environment (AARSE) Conference will take place in Nairobi, Kenya, 18-21 October 2004. The AARSE Conference is the largest gathering of remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems users in Africa. UNESCO is sponsoring this conference and there will be a joint GOOS-AFRICA/AARSE session on coastal and marine remote sensing during the conference.

     BCLME Data Assimilation Workshop

The International Workshop on Forecasting and Data Assimilation in the Benguela and Comparable Systems will take place at the Breakwater Lodge in Cape Town from 8 to 11 November 2004. International interest in regional ocean observing and forecasting is evident from the strategies of the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS). The workshop is sponsored by the Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystem Programme, IAPSO, IUGG, GOOS, IRD (France), BENEFIT and ICSU/SCOR. This workshop is a crucial step in the development of a viable observing and forecasting system for the Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystem, for fast-tracking GOOS-AFRICA, and for implementing a key strategy of IAPSO.

      2nd International Geophysical Conference

The 2nd International Geophysical Conference will take place in Luanda, Angola, 24-26 November 2004, to promote geophysical awareness in Angola. Organizer: Sociedade de Geofisica de Angola.

GOOS-AFRICA has become an Observer in the Metocean Committee

of  the International Association of the Oil and Gas Producers

The International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (OGP) encompasses most of the world's leading publicity-traded, private and state-owned oil and gas companies, oil and gas associations and major upstream service companies. OGP members produce more than half the world's oil and about one third of its gas. Given the OGP Members' activities in West Africa in particular, there is considerable interest at the potential for mutual benefit between the GOOS-AFRICA networks and the OGP members.

See the OGP highlights at: http://www.ogp.org.uk/highlights.
