Regional Programmes

The IOC's regional subsidiary bodies (sub-commissions and regional committees)

The IOC's regional subsidiary bodies are responsible for the promotion, development and co-ordination of the Commission's marine scientific research programmes, the ocean services, and related activities, including TEMA (training, education and mutual assistance), in their respective regions. In establishing their programmes, they take into account the specific interests and needs of the member States in the region.

The major regions:

• The Caribbean and adjacent regions (IOCARIBE)
• The Western Pacific region (WESTPAC)
• The North and Central Western Indian Ocean region (IOCINCWIO)
• The Central Indian Ocean region (IOCINDIO)
• The Central Eastern Atlantic region (IOCEA)
• The Southern Oceans region (IOCSOC)

Additional regions in which the IOC has some activities:

• The South East Pacific region
• The South West Atlantic region
• The Mediterranean region
• The Black Sea region
• The Persian Gulf, Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden region
• The Caspian Sea region
