17 April 2008: India Prepared to Assume Tsunami Watch in June
India is to become the first Tsunami Watch Provider for the Indian Ocean as of June this year. India’s offer was accepted by the Intergovernmental Coordination group for the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System,  which was meeting in Putrajaya, Malaysia, from 8 to 12 April 2008. This heralds the dawn of a new era of autonomy for the network of regional tsunami watch providers in the Indian Ocean. Read more.

17 April 2008: EuroGOOS 2008 Coastal to Global Operational Oceanography: Achievements and Challenges

The 5th EuroGOOS Conference is being held at Sandy Park, Exeter, UK from 20-22 May 2008. The conference is opening with an address from Dame Barbara Young and includes sessions on: Observations: in situ and space-based; Global and regional services; Coastal and EEZ services; Modelling: nowcast, forecast and reanalysis; Information systems and data management
. About 250 marine scientists are expected to attend.

14 April 2008: The Fourth Global Conference on Oceans, Coasts, and Islands, “Advancing Ecosystem Management and Integrated Coastal and Ocean Management by 2010 in the Context of Climate Change” (Fourth Global Conference) hosted by the Government of Viet Nam, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and co-sponsored by IOC, took place in Hanoi, Viet Nam, from 8-11 April 2008. IOC was represented by Chairman Javier Valladeres and Julian Barbiere and Stefano Belfiore from the Secretariat.

11 April 2008:
The IOC announces the third call of the Fellowship Programme in Sea Level Science and Applications 2008 for the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System.

Deadline for applications: 1st June 2008.

11 April 2008: The OceanObs'09 Symposium will take place in Venice, Italy, 21-25 September 2009. Meeting goals: document the importance and benefits of the existing ocean observing system; demonstrate its scientific, societal and economic impacts; revisit the current status, and update plans for the physical and carbon ocean observing systems; advance capabilities for marine biogeochemistry and ecosystems.

2 April 2008: The international course on Satellite Oceanography 2008 will take place at CICESE, Ensenada BC, Mexico, 3-23 August 2008. To apply for admission, please send a letter of intent and your CV as soon as it is possible to the Course Secretariat. The deadline for application has been extended to 20 April 2008. More information in the course announcement.

1 April 2008: Second Vai Pasifika Newsletter just issued. Vai Pasifika, the joint newsletter of the Pacific Islands Observing Systems, is released quarterly and aims to inform partners and stakeholders of recent news, issues and activities associated with the Pacific Islands Global Ocean Observing System (PI-GOOS), the Pacific Islands Global Climate Observing System (PI-GCOS), and the Pacific Islands Hydrological Cycle Observing System (Pacific HYCOS).
By bringing together information resources for these observing systems, its aim is to encourage a more unified approach to observing the Pacific climate/water ecosystem.
