A global conference has been announced to assess the
past decade of progress and to address new and continuing challenges
vis-à-vis the world’s oceans and coasts. The event is scheduled for the
end of December of next year, which will be approaching the ten-year mark
following the Rio Earth Summit or UNCED*. The
venue will be UNESCO Headquarters, Paris, France. |
As is well known, a broad oceans and coasts agenda was adopted at UNCED,
including the implementation of Chapter 17 of Agenda 21 and the Rio Principles
on Environment and Development, further implementation of the UN Convention on
the Law of the Sea, and the implementation of the oceans and coasts aspects of
the Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Convention on Biological
Diversity.
The global conference Oceans and Coasts at RIO +10: Assessing Progress,
Addressing Continuing and New Challenges, aims to:
• Provide an assessment of progress achieved in all aspects of the post-UNCED
oceans and coasts agendas;
• Identify continuing or persistent challenges that need to be addressed
with renewed commitment;
• Identify new, arising challenges that need to be addressed;
• Examine cross-cutting issues among various ocean and coastal sectors;
• Consider options for concerted action on outstanding cross-sectoral
issues.
