It is with great sorrow that we inform you of the passing away of our good
friend and colleague, George D. Grice, Jr. George was with us, at
the IOC headquarters in Paris, conducting excellent work in the Ocean
Sciences section.

George went
home for Christmas and decided to have a non-urgent, optional
heart operation done while there to repair a leaking valve.
Unfortunately,
post-surgery complications developed, including a massive allergic
reaction to an antibiotic administered to treat an infection.
This weakened
him considerably and, despite encouraging recent signs of recovery,
he died unexpectedly last Friday.

As you can imagine, we are here still
trying to cope with this sad situation. In the short few years he was here,
many of us had grown very close to George. He was everyone's friend and
will be sorely missed.
George was a distinguished scientist. He
served as chair of the Biology Department of the Woods Hole Oceanographic
Institution, and as the Associate Director of the Institution. In about
1990, he went to serve at the National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA) as
Director of the Research Planning and Coordination for the Northeast
Fisheries Science Center, becoming later Deputy Director of the Center.
Since then, George came to Paris to join the Secretariat of the
Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission in Paris, as Senior Assistant
Secretary.
A graveside service will take place at
11 am, on Friday 16 March 2001, at Magnolia Cemetery in Charleston,
South Carolina, USA. In lieu of flowers, the family have requested that
donations be made to the George D. Grice, Jr. Postdoctoral Endowed
Fellowship Fund, at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Memorial
donations may be made and sent directly to:
