Fifth IOC/WESTPAC International Scientific Symposium

Objective

The objective of the symposium is to bring together marine scientists with a view to encouraging an interdisciplinary scientific approach towards the management and sustainable development of seas and oceans, in particular by:

  • promoting the exchange of ideas and information among scientists, particularly young scientists inside and outside the region in the field of marine scientific research, observation and monitoring, education and training;

  • identifying local study areas of scientific challenge;

  • helping IOC Member States to effectively address the regional needs of sustainable development of marine resources through the development of interdisciplinary projects; as well as

  • to address such global needs as monitoring of climate-change, marine pollution, sea-level rise and biological diversity.

Date and venue

The Symposium will be held from 27-31 August 2001 in Seoul, Republic of Korea.

Language

English will be the official language of the Symposium.

Themes

The Symposium will cover the following themes:

  • Ocean Dynamics and Climate

  • Marine Pollution and Monitoring

  • Marine Ecosystem Dynamics

  • Marine Geology and Sediment Dynamics

  • Marine Scientific Research Regime in the WESTPAC Region.

The Symposium will consist of sessions of invited papers, voluntary papers and poster sessions. In addition, the Symposium will devote special attention to the regional components of the Global Ocean Observing System in two separate workshops entitled: "NEAR-GOOS Ocean Environment Forecasting" and "Implementation Planning Meeting for the Establishment of SEAGOOS in the Wider Southeast Asian Region" respectively.

Financial Support

Financial support will be available for a limited number of participants, especially for young scientists from developing countries in the WESTPAC region. Applications for financial support will be evaluated on the basis of the submitted abstract and geographical distribution. The organizer reserves the right for selection of supported participants.
