7. Geographical areas in which the ship will operate:

Area 1 Western Black Sea
Area 2 Central Black Sea
Area 3 Sorokin Trough south of Crimea, Black Sea
Area 4 Shatski Rise, Black Sea
Area 5 Aegean Sea
Area 6 Cobblestone-3 mud volcano field, Mediterranean Sea
Area 7 Gulf of Valencia, Mediterranean Sea
Area 8 Gulf of Cadiz
Area 9 Ampère, Lion and Seine seamounts and margin of Madeira Island.

8. Purpose of the cruise:

Studies of geological processes in the Black and Mediterranean Seas and on the North East Atlantic margin - the 11th international ‘Floating University’ expedition of the UNESCO/IOC Training-trough-Research Programme with research and training purposes. Scientists and students who have already expressed their interest in joining the cruise are from: Brazil, Greece, Morocco, the Netherlands, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Turkey, the UK and the Ukraine.

9. Intended ports of call:

  • Constanza (Romania) 24-25.07.2001Istanbul(Turkey) 6-7.08.2001
  • Valencia (Spain) 20-21.08.2001
  • Funchal (Madeira, Portugal) 3.09.2001

10. Purpose of research and general operational methods:

The principle purpose of the cruise will be to study geological processes, such as bottom current activity, slope processes, mud volcanism, neo-tectonics, manifestations of shallow gas, etc. in the Black and Mediterranean Seas and on the North East Atlantic margin, as well as to train students from Western Europe, Northern Africa, Brazil, the Ukraine and Russia in marine research.

In the Black Sea, the cruise will be focussed on mud volcanism, manifestation of shallow gas and related phenomena, such as sub-bottom gas hydrate occurrence, diagenetic mineralisation, and chemosynthetic biological communities. The phenomenon of mud volcanism, in relation with local fluid and tectonic regime, will also be investigated in the Cobblestone-3 field of the Ionian Sea and in the Gulf of Cadiz, following previous TTR studies in these areas.

In the Aegean Sea, the scientific aim is to investigate the westward extension and propagation of the North Anatolian Fault into the N. Aegean and its transition from a strike-slip/ transtensional to extensional deformation towards Greece.

A debris flow at the Ebro continental slope and rise, within the Valencia Gulf, off the Columbretes Islets will be acoustically and optically mapped and, eventually, sampled.

Sedimentological, geochemical and oceanographic processes related with ferromanganese deposits and phosphorites, occurring on the Ampère, Lion and Seine seamounts, located between the Portuguese coast and Madeira Island will be investigated. Because of their marginal position to the abyssal area of the Atlantic, it is subject to the influence of upwelling of oceanic waters. We also want to find out whether any remaining influence of the Mediterranean Water can be identified there.

The cruise has the potential to improve the scientific knowledge on some outstanding problems in the field of geological and geochemical processes in the Black and Mediterranean Seas and on the North East Atlantic margin, and at the same time is aimed to provide advanced on-the-job training for students and young scientists from different countries.

The research methods to be used are as follows:

1) deep-towed sidescan sonar O.R.E.tech with 6 kHz subbottom profiler;
2) deep-towed sidescan sonar MAK-1M with 6 kHz subbottom profiler;
3) long range sidescan sonar OKEAN
5) single channel high-resolution seismic system with an airgun source;
6) bottom towed TV system;
7) gravity and box coring;
8) sampling with the TV-controlled grab;
9) CTD-measurements
10) dredging (Areas 8 and 9 only)
