BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA,25-26 SEPTEMBER 1998

 

In recognition of the importance of the ocean, the marine environment and its resources for life on earth and for sustainable development, the United Nations has declared 1998 as the International Year of the ocean. This provides a window of opportunity for governments, organisations and individuals to become aware of the ocean situation and to consider the actions needed to undertake our common responsibility to sustain the greatest common heritage we have and without which we cannot exist (UNESCO), Asia-Pacific; economic implications of regulation of fisheries; the coastal zone and sand rights; capacity building; the implication for Queensland of Australia's Oceans Policy, and much more.

The conference dinner on Friday 25th September 1998 will include the Evatt Memorial Lecture. The Conference and the Conference Dinner will be held at the Brisbane Convention Centre, Cnr. Glenelg 8 Merrivale Streets, South Brisbane.

The United Nations Association Australia (Qld) is organising a conference which aims to raise awareness about the policy, legal, environmental and management issues - pertaining to the marine environment. Peace and security, the environment, and economics comprise the main conference themes regarding current maritime issues in the Asia-Pacific region. Regional and local issues in Queensland will also be specifically addressed. Other specific issues discussed at the conference include: Indigenous Australians and marine and coastal rights, protection of the marine environment in south-east Asia; peace and security in the Speakers and Chairpersons so far include:

  • Commodore Jack McCaffrie, Director General Naval Corporate Management;
  • Commodore Sam Bateman, Executive Director, Centre for Maritime Police, University of Wollongong;
  • Dr Peter Chalk, Lecturer in International Relations, University of Queensland;
  • Mr Howard Bamsey, Deputy Secretary, Environment Australia;
  • Dr Tongroj Onchan, President, Thailand Environment Institute;
  • Mr Les Malezer, General Manager, Foundation for Aboriginal and Islander Research Action;
  • Mr Orville Magoon, President, Coastal Zone Foundation, California;
  • Dr lan Tibbitts, School of Marine Science, University of Queensland.
