Integrated Coastal Zone Management Workshop

20 March-9 April 1998, Songkhla, Thailand

The Importance of Coastal Zone

The transitional strip of land and sea that straddles the coastline contains some of the most productive and valuable habitats within the country including estuaries, lagoons, coastal wetlands, mangrove forests, and fringing coral reefs. The coastal zone is a place of high priority interest to people, to commerce, to the military, and to a variety of industries. Because of social and economic development, the coastal zone undergoes great environmental modification and deterioration through landfill, dredging, and pollution caused by urban, industrial, aquaculture and agricultural development. There is an urgent need for coastal states to strengthen their capabilities for integrated coastal zone management
by working towards the development of appropriate strategies and programmes.

Integrated Coastal Zone Management Workshop

The ICZM Workshop has been developed under the United Nations' TRAIN-SEA-COAST (TSC) Programme, which is an inter-country cooperative training and human resources development network in the field of coastal and ocean management. TSC programme was launched in 1993 by the United Nations, Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea. CORIN is a part of this network composed of 11 training/ educational centres in 10 countries. The Integrated Coastal Zone Management Workshop has been designed and tailored (1) to address the priority problems and needs of Thailand and other countries in the region, (2) to match training closely to the needs and specific jobs of the participants in order to provide moreeffective training, (3) by a rigorous manpower asessment and trainingneeds analysis, and (4) to match with the highest international standards. The course focuses on management framework, methods and tools analysis of impacts from development projects in the coastal zone. Participants will be provided with an analysis of integrated coastal zone management and will be able to expose a variety of approaches that havebeen developed. Participants will have an opportunity to exchange their coastal zone management analysis developed from their countries, also from Thailand.
Case studies and field trips will be the highlights of the course; group participants will be able to interview local people and identify their own issues for case study. Participants will have an opportunity to involve with the southern Thailand's lifestyles.

The Coastal Resources Institute (CORIN)

CORIN was established within the Prince of Songkla University as an inter-disciplinary institute and a center to promote excellence in Integrated Coastal Zone Management. It aims to assist local andnational governments, state enterprise and other private organizations in Thailand and elsewhere to develop and implement integrated coastal zone management programs. CORIN is becoming a center oftraining and research for much of the Asia Pacific region. Many countries in the region sent policy and management delegates to CORIN for training, site visits, and interviews on coastal zone management issues.
