International Symposium on Information Technology in Oceanography - ITO '9812-16 October 1998, Goa, India Objectives The International Symposium on Information Technology in Oceanography aims to review application of Information Technology and identify areas of potential application. It also aims to bring Information Managers, Ocean Industry, Scientists, Researchers and Academicians to a common forum where the use of Information Technology in Oceanography is the focus. The Symposium deals with all aspects of Information Technology applications, Management Information Systems, and Human Resource Management for IT applications in Oceanography. Its objectives are to assess the requirements of end-users (scientists, researchers, industry) and to find means of IT to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of ocean industry. The conclusion of the symposium would draw the potentials for IT applications in Oceanography.
- CALL FOR PAPERS - Subject Areas/Disciplines Original contributions in the following topics are invited in respect of objectives of the symposium:
Abstracts Abstracts of no more than 250 words should be submitted by e-mail to : Ito98@csnio.ren.nic.in or by regular post or Fax: (91 832) 223340 before 27 February 1998. Contributors are encouraged to augment their presentation with live demonstrations of the software or database, for example, and their utility. Abstracts should be submitted to:
Submitted abstracts will be reviewed on the basis of merit of contents corresponding the theme of the symposium for oral or poster presentation. Acceptance will be communicated before 31st March 1998. Selected authors will be requested to submit full-length paper by 1st May 1998, which will be reviewed for publications. Authors will have to submit camera-ready papers for publication before August 1, 1998. Plenary Lectures Plenary lectures by eminent personalities on the lead issues in IT applications to oceanography are being arranged. Exhibits and Demonstration Display space will be provided for organizations to publicize their products, services and to distribute relevant to the Symposium. Facilities are available for database and other on-line demonstrations via Internet. Social, Cultural Activities and Tours Social and cultural events are planned as also sight seeing tours and river cruises for the ITO 98 participants and their guests. The National Institute of Oceanography NIO is a multidisciplinary organization carrying out research in physical, chemical, biological, geological and geophysical aspects of oceanography. It has a team of instrumentation scientists dedicated to the development of instruments for oceanographic studies. The institute keeps abreast with international developments in research and has created new facilities in ocean engineering, control of biofouling & corrosion and marine archaeology. At present over 600 scientific and technical satff contribute to the institute's endeavours. The institute has well-equipped laboratories connected by Local Area Network (LAN) with distributed computing facilities. It also runs the research vessel Sagar Kanya 9owned by Department of Ocean Development), for its open ocean research programmes. Other infrastructural facilities are the Responsible National Oceanographic Data Centre (RNODC), the Library and Information Service. Institute has recently commissioned "Indian National Oceanographic Internet Server (INOIS)" with high speed Internet connectivity.
"Pearl of the Orient" as it is known, Goa occupies a prominent place on the tourist map of India. Long stretches of Calangute, Colva and Vagator beaches, Dudhsage and Arvallem waterfalls and Mahavir and Bondla Wild Life sancturies enhance the scenic beauty of this territory. Basillica de Bom Jesus and Se Cathedral charches at Old Goa are famous for their intricately carved wooden alters mede by goan craftsmen. Ponda Taluka has 7 temples within a radius of 5 km. The most interesting is the tiny but exquisite Shri Manguesh Temple on green hills, dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple boasts of its giant silver statues, old local chandeliers, tiles on walls and the tall elegant deepastambha (lamp post) at the entrance. Goan food is delicious with rice and fish being important components of the diet. Langauges spoken are Konkani, Marathi, Hindi and Portuguese. Registration Fees
