International Symposium on Information Technology in Oceanography - ITO '98

12-16 October 1998, Goa, India

Objectives

The International Symposium on Information Technology in Oceanography aims to review application of Information Technology and identify areas of potential application. It also aims to bring Information Managers, Ocean Industry, Scientists, Researchers and Academicians to a common forum where the use of Information Technology in Oceanography is the focus.

The Symposium deals with all aspects of Information Technology applications, Management Information Systems, and Human Resource Management for IT applications in Oceanography.

Its objectives are to assess the requirements of end-users (scientists, researchers, industry) and to find means of IT to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of ocean industry. The conclusion of the symposium would draw the potentials for IT applications in Oceanography.

Social, Cultural Activities and Tours

Social and cultural events are planned as also sight seeing tours and river cruises for the ITO 98 participants and their guests.

The National Institute of Oceanography

NIO is a multidisciplinary organization carrying out research in physical, chemical, biological, geological and geophysical aspects of oceanography. It has a team of instrumentation scientists dedicated to the development of instruments for oceanographic studies.

The institute keeps abreast with international developments in research and has created new facilities in ocean engineering, control of biofouling & corrosion and marine archaeology. At present over 600 scientific and technical satff contribute to the institute's endeavours.

The institute has well-equipped laboratories connected by Local Area Network (LAN) with distributed computing facilities. It also runs the research vessel Sagar Kanya 9owned by Department of Ocean Development), for its open ocean research programmes. Other infrastructural facilities are the Responsible National Oceanographic Data Centre (RNODC), the Library and Information Service. Institute has recently commissioned "Indian National Oceanographic Internet Server (INOIS)" with high speed Internet connectivity.

Goa

"Pearl of the Orient" as it is known, Goa occupies a prominent place on the tourist map of India. Long stretches of Calangute, Colva and Vagator beaches, Dudhsage and Arvallem waterfalls and Mahavir and Bondla Wild Life sancturies enhance the scenic beauty of this territory.
