Oceanology International 98 -
The Global Ocean

EXHIBITION AND CONFERENCE

10-13 March 1998, Brighton, UK

Invitation

We are delighted to invite you to take part in the XVth Oceanology International Exhibition & Conference in Brighton, 10-13 March 1998, the world’s largest marine science and ocean technology event. On show will be an unprecedented array of equipment, systems, technologies and scientific research services for application worldwide. Many of the exhibitors will be using OI 98 as a launch pad for new product developments. OI attracts "floor sales" that run into millions of pounds.

Now is the time to put the dates in your diary; plan your participation in the conference as a conference speaker or delegate; plan your visit to the exhibition; and make your plans to exhibit.

The 1996 event attracted an audience of 4759 professional trade visitors from 53 countries representing enormous purchasing power. More than 550 exhibiting companies took part in the exhibition and there were more than 150 representatives of the world’s press present. Inside you will find more information about the exhibition and the conference. The global marine science community meets in Brighton just once every two years – we very much look forward to welcoming you there.

"The Global Ocean"

The conference theme is "The Global Ocean" and the Conference Committee is assembling a leading-edge scientific and technical programme addressing the following key topics:

  • Access to Information
  • Acoustics m(propagation/imaging)
  • AUVs/UUVs
  • Coastal zone management
  • Disposal of waste at sea
  • Littoral oceanography
  • Ecosystems – micro &macro
  • Key enabling technologies
  • Marine biology /biotechnology
  • Rapid environmental assessment

Free delegate registration – No admission fees

A hallmark of the OI series in Brighton is that there are no admission fees and no conference delegate fees. This unique "no-fee" policy adds much to the strength of the whole event. It encourages as many visitors as possible to attend whichever conference presentations may interest them, from their own or from other disciplines and so it greatly enhances the cross-fertilisation of ideas between the many different specialist areas that comprise Oceanology International.

Message from the Conference Chairman

"As we celebrate ‘The Year of the Oceans’, it is opportune for the Oceanology International 98 Conference to look beyond technology to the social and economic benefits we gain from the oceans. Sponsors, whether in industry or government, are looking for increased cost effectiveness, for a quantifiable return on investment, in ever shortening timescales. Yet in contrast, much of the research needed to understand and predict the ocean can only be done with long term programmes that may last a decade or more. How do we resolve these conflicts? How can we anticipate future needs and future trends such that partnerships and investment commit to the long term? Whilst it is clear that the Oceans have an impact on all our lives, it is now time to raise the impact of Oceanography on our society."
