IOC-WESTPAC 4th International Scientific Symposium 

- Role of Ocean Sciences for Sustainable Development 

2-7 February 1998, Okinawa, Japan

The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) is a commission under UNESCO to promote the development of marine science in the world. Several sub-commissions have been set up under IOC, one of them is the SubCommission for the Western Pacific (WESTPAC). IOC/WESTPAC has sponsored three international scientific symposia, in Townsville, Australia in 1989, in Penang, Malaysia in 1991, and in Bali, Indonesia in 1994, respectively. Based on the success of these symposia, the IOC-WESTPAC Third Session in Tokyo, Japan, February 1996, announced the intention to organize the fourth IOC-WESTPAC international Scientific Symposium on "Role of Ocean Sciences for Sustainable Development", to be held in Okinawa, February 1998. The Fourth Symposium will be organized jointly by the Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture, Uni. of the Ryukyus, Ocean Research Institute, the University of Tokyo and IOC/UNESCO.

- CALL FOR PAPERS -

Papers are called for on topics of the 4th IOC/WESTPAC Symposium. WESTPAC scientists are encouraged to submit papers arising from the WESTPAC Scientific Projects along the line of the following topics:

(1) Ocean services
(2) Ocean dynamics and climate
(3) Ocean science in relation to non-living marine resources
(4) Ocean science in relation to living marine resources
 
 
31 October 1997 - Deadline for the submission of abstract
31 December 1997 - The symposium program distributed
31 March 1998 - Deadline for the submission of the full manuscripts
for proceedings
 

Abstracts

Abstracts should be written in English on an A4 size paper, with a 12-pitch type or 11-point font size. Abstracts should not exceed 250 words. It should include authors' names and affilations with their postal addresses. It should be sent to the Local Organizing Committee (LOG). The deadline for submitting abstracts is extended to 31 October 1997.

Full paper

Full paper should be prepared in camera ready form, on A4 size paper, 12-pitch type or 11-point font size, single spaced, for not more than 12 papges including tables and figures. Citation in the text: Moosa (1983); (Jones & Ahmad, 1991), and Reference are listed in alphabetical order of the author(s). The deadline for submitting full paper is 31 March 1998.

Poster

Poster presentations will be welcome. In case that the number of submitted papers is too large to be accomodated in the time allocated for oral presentation, then poster is suggested. In that case the author will be informed. Poster boards with 90 x 180 cm size will be provided by the LOC. The poster must be easily readable from one meter away. It is suggested that the poster should be visually appealing and professional in appearance.

Registration Fees

Payment should be made in Japanese Yen at the registration desk. Registration fees (in Japanese Yen) are as follows:

General participant 15,000 Yen
Student 10,000 Yen
Accompanying person 10,000 Yen

Accommodation & Travel

The Local Organizing Committe has arranged Economy Class Hotel (Naha Skyplaza Hotel: single-8,000 Yen, twin- 6,000 Yen /person), and Standard Class Hotel (Pacific Hotel Okinawa: single-9,000 Yen, twin-6,500 Yen/person) for all participants. Service charge and breakfast are included in the price.

Naha International Airport, Okinawa, can be reached from Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, Kansai, Fukuoka and Kagoshima by many domestic flights. Some airlines also have direct international flights to Naha from Hongkong, Seoul and Taipei.

A limited number of travel support is available for scientists from the developing countries in the WESTPAC region. He/she should submit a paper relevant to the symposium and be recommended for support by IOC/WESTPAC. However, taking account of the limited funds avaiable, the organizer reserves the right to make a selection as to who amongst the registered applicants should receive the travel support.

Visas are required for for tourists who are citizens from some countries. Those who need visas, please apply for invitation and personal guarantee to Prof. Makoto Terazaki of the LOG.
