Among others the
following activities have been implemented by Brazil
Young Scientist Award (Premio Jovem Cientista) was given this year under the theme of
the Oceans: a Food Source (Oceanos:Fonte de Alimentos) as an initiative of the Ministry of
Science and Technology to celebrate the 1998 International Year of the Ocean. This award
is given annually jointly by CNPq-National research Council for Science and Technology
(Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cientifico e Tecnologico) by Roberto Marinho
Foundation and by a private enterprise called GERDAU Group.
An exhibition of science and technology related to the oceans was held at the Natural
History Museum of the University of Lisbon , Portugal from 12 June to 31 July 1998.That
exposition was a joint initiative of the Ministry of Science and technology, the Ministry
of Environment, the Ministry of the Navy of Hydrographic and Navigation, the
Interministerial commission for Sea Resources (CIRM) and PETROBRAS-Brazilian Oil Company.
A competition for young students was organized on the importance of the Sea for Brazil.
This competition was promoted by the CIRM.
