Some Exhibits related to the IYO exhibition

  1. Mr. Machimura, Minister of Education, Science, Sports and Culture signed the Ocean Charter in his office on 15 July. In the video he said, "Japan is surrounded by sea. The Japanese have had important relation to the sea since ancient times. The twentieth of July is "Marine Day". The aim of "Marine Day" is to thank the sea for the benefit of the sea and hope for the prosperity of Japan, as an ocean nation. I signed up the Ocean Charter which declares protection of ocean environment. This is a good chance for us to make efforts to protect the beautiful sea and hand over benefit of the sea to the future generation.".
  2. Special exhibition was held in Tokyo, Japan from 7 March to 10 May, sponsored by The National Science Museum "Living in the Sea-East or be Eaten". Models and bones and explanation panels of sea creatures and so on were exhibited there. The exhibition was in co-operation with Japanese National Commission for UNESCO.
  3. Dr. Keisuke Taira, Chairperson of Japanese National Committee for the IOC appearing in the newspaper on 20 July. In the newspaper he introduces the main events related to the IYO and recent researches of the sea on the internet.
  4. The Kojima, Japanese training-ship visited Lisbon from 13-17 July while the Kojima stayed in Lisbon for the city's EXPO'98, the Kojima was opened to the public and "One-Day Sea Experience for Parents and Children" was held.
  5. Japan Oceanographic Data Center (JODC)'s website. http://www.jodc.jhd.go.jp/ where you can get some information, and Data Online Service System, etc.
  6. Summer Festival'98 "Search for Deep Sea" was held in Hiroshima, Japan from 19July-30August, sponsored by Hiroshima City Transportation Museum.
  7. "Story of Deep Sea Research" by Japan Marine Science Technology Center (JAMSTEC). This brochure explains deep sea research with a lot of illustrations.
  8. The Fourth International Scientific Symposium "Role of Ocean Sciences for Sustainable Development" was held in Okinawa, Japan on 2-7 February, organized by Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture, University of the Ryukyus and Ocean Research Institute, and the University of Tokyo. The theme of the symposium is the "Role of the Ocean Sciences for Sustainable Development". About 100 people from Thailand, china, New Zealand, Russia, USA, France, India and other countries and about 100 ocean scholars form Japan participated in the symposium. More than 10 researches, for example "To build system of GOOS", "Preservation of ocean environment and ocean health", "Role of ocean to life maintenance system" etc, were presented. In the reception Mr. Ota, Governor of Okinawa Prefecture welcomed and entertained the participants, and the Okinawa Dance was performed by students of University of Ryukyus.
  9. An International Conference "Man and Ocean" has been held in Tokyo, Morioka and Kamiishi from 29 October to 2 November 1998, sponsored by the United Nations University, Ocean Research Institute, The University of Tokyo and Iwate Prefectural Government with the co-operation of UNESCO and UNEP...
