Public Awareness Work

Serial dialogue on "International Year of the Ocean 1998" given by Mr. Kim Ju Jon, Deputy Director of Oceanographic Department SHMA and Dr. Kim Gi Hwan, oceanographer was broadcasted by Central TV Broadcast 4 times in May, July, August, and September. The titles of subjects are: "IYO initiative and concerning international events", "Crisis of Oceans", "Ocean and Climate, El Nino, Ocean and Pollution", "Ocean Resources and its Development, Ocean to be Handed over the Posterity".

Symposium on Ocean Science

The planned symposium has been conducted as follows.
Dates: 2-24 September 1998, Juche 87
Place: West Sea Oceanographic Research Institute (WSORI) under State Hydrometeorological Administration (SHMA) in Nampo City
Sponsorship: Co-sponsored by SHMA and Central Committee of General Korea Science and Technology Federation, National Commission for IYO.
Participants: Participated of 85 members of ocean scientists from concerning institutions, SHMA, teachers and researchers from the ocean related universities scientists and technicians from Academy of Science, fishery, maritime navigation and tideland fields.

100,000 sheets of IYO memorial stamps have been issued by Korea stamp Corporation in May 1998, Juche 87.
