political awareness
- * scientific symposium on actual problems on the marine environment;
- * symposium on Baltic Sea research in support of maritime shipping as part of the 1998
German Maritime Shipping Day;
- * lectures on the role of the ocean;
- week of ocean research, organized by Bremen University, exhibition and
lectures;
- opening of a new section on oceanography at the German Maritime Museum
in Bremerhaven;
- dedication of the "Seewart-Medaille" of the BSH, the only
maritime award in Germany, to merits concerning the improvement of the knowledge of the
sea;
- production of videos on oceanographic work;
- increased installation of World Wide Web pages.
Incentives for
additional oceanographic activities
- compilation of the German GOOS contribution and start of its
implementation;
- installation of two major additional platforms of Marnet, the BSH
network of automatic recording oceanographic stations in the North Sea and Baltic Sea;
- modification of the German monitoring programme for the North Sea and
Baltic Sea;
- commission of a new hydrographic survey vessel equipped with the most
advanced technology;
Training, Education and
Mutual Assistance
- Assessment and intensification of German TEMA activities through a
national workshop;
Contributions to
international activities
- participation in EXPO98 by:
- * the contribution to the EXPO exhibition;
- * the visit of four German research vessels;
- * the participation in the Congress programme;
- video on oceanographic work being made available to IOC;
- co-operation in specific activities with IOC and individual Member States, as
appropriate.
