Ghana

Ghana launched the Year of the Ocean on Friday June 12, 1998 with an opening event chaired by Dr. Farouk Ibraimah, Deputy Minister of Environment, Science and Technology.   At the celebrations, attended by school children of the Associated School Project of the UNESCO Commission, speeches by representatives of the Ministry of Tourism, and the Deputy Minister of Education, Mr. Kwabena Kyereh, highlighted the importance of the oceans and the need for further research and protection.  All speakers also emphasized the need to raise awareness and the importance of ocean education, especially for children.
