IYO Activities in New Zealand

OCEAN VOYAGE ‘98

The aim of the programme is to foster an awareness of the special nature of New Zealand’s oceanic environment.

Ocean Voyage ‘98 is a classroom programme for primary schools designed to provide teachers and students with opportunities to integrate the tools of information and communication technologies with novel hands-on resources to enhance science skills and knowledge. The programme will involve regular communication with scientists involved in current research projects in New Zealand and beyond. This programme is being sponsored by NIWA and The Royal Society of New Zealand

Poster Competition

This poster competition is presented by the NZ Association of Science Educators and The Royal Society of NZ in conjunction with the Australian Science Teachers' Association as part of their Science Week activities, and is proudly sponsored by Orica Ltd. NZASE invites school students to design posters on the theme of The Ocean and to enter their work in the Poster Competition. The winning entries from New Zealand will then be exhibited in the Australian competition.

Art Competition

NIWA has organised and sponsored an art competition open to all secondary school students throughout New Zealand The theme "Images inspired by the Ocean" can be portrayed in the medium of paint, pastel, pencil or print. The artwork must be original work generated in 1998 and must be the artist’s own. There are North and South Island sections and categories for 3rd-4th Form and 5th-7th Form. Prizes for each category will be $150, $60, $40, plus merit certificates. All participating schools go into a prize draw of $200 for art supplies. Some suggested idea’s for the theme are: coral reefs· waves · ocean bottom · navigation · pollution · ocean environment · southern ocean · whaling · pacific islands NIWA will display and promote the winning entries

Essay Competition

NIWA has organised and sponsored an essay competition open to all secondary school students throughout New Zealand. The topic is "The Importance of the World's Oceans" with the essay limited to 1000 words. Some suggested idea’s include: influence of ocean on climate · ocean as a food supply · transportation using the ocean · biodiversity · extreme environments · mineral wealth. There are North and South Island sections and categories for 3rd-4th Form and 5th-7th Form. Prizes for each category will be $150, $60, $40, plus merit certificates. All participating schools go into a prize draw of $200 for science equipment. NIWA will promote the winning entries.

Seaviews Conference

The Seaviews conference, in 1998 - the International Year of the Oceans, explored the concepts and practice of marine ecosystem management, the opportunities and obligations.

All sectors with an interest in the sea were invited. The conference covered all areas-from terrestial impacts on the sea and coastal management, through to the management of human impacts on the deep oceans. Our focus was on preferred futures, solutions, and how we get there.

Safeguarding these gifts for our future

This seminar will be hosted by hosted by Auckland Institute of Technology on July 3rd 1998. The keynote speaker will be Dr Caroline Heeps, Bournemouth University, UK.
