Introduction

Slovenia is contributing to the International Year of the Ocean project under its national theme »Sea - Our Opportunity and Future«. In accordance with the resolution on the International Year of the Ocean, the Slovenian national commission-UNESCO and the Slovenian National Oceanographic Commission has accepted a program to promote public awareness of the need for conservation of marine and coastal resources. The activities are coordinated by the National Oceanographic Commission in collaboration with the Marine Biological Station Piran, National Institute of Biology, which is the only national organization for marine research in Slovenia.

Activities and Events

  • Initiatives for additional oceanographic activities: GOOS - Symposium Coordinated Adriatic Observing System (CAOS) (Trieste, 21-22.Oct.1998);
  • The releasing of marine turtles into the wild from Piran aquarium within Action plan for the conservation of Mediterranean marine turtles (UNEP-MAP);
  • Kayak expedition - Jadran 98 from Igoumenitsa in Greece to Monfalcone in Italy (1303 km) from 12. Aug. to 26. Sep. 1998;
  • A week of presentations of the international and Slovenian national contributions to the Year of the Ocean during 1998 (Internautica'98, Portoroz, 13.-17. May 98);
  • Promotion of the public version of the Ocean Charter, known as My Ocean Charter;
  • Exhibition for the 30th anniversary of Marine Biological Station »Colors of the Sea« (Izola, 4.-17. Dec.98);
  • Presentation of the book »Ecosystems at the Land-Sea Margin: Drainage Basin to Coastal Sea« Estuarine and Coastal Studies 55. American Geophysical Union (Jan. 1999).

Education and Training

  • Contributions for the general public in daily journals, research journals, education programs on the national radio and TV;
  • Courses for teachers and professors of secondary and high schools;
  • Summer course for young talented students (Fiesa DUO-98, June 98);
  • Summer course on scientific illustrations (in collaboration with Academy of Arts)
  • UNESCO Associated Schools Project (Sept. 1998)
  • Production of videos on marine life and ecological problems in the Gulf of Trieste;
  • Exhibition of Slovenian literature related to ocean and sea themes (Piran, Aug.-Oct.98).

Contribution to international activities

  • Participation in EXPO'98 with the exhibition »Slovenia-Terra mystica «
  • Prime minister signed the Ocean Charter in the UN pavilion during the Slovenian National day (EXPO’98, Lisbon, 23. May 1998)
