This is the full listing of activities organized
by the United Kingdom to commemorate the 1998 International Year of the Ocean.
The UK UNESCO FORUM continues to serve as a clearing house for the many bodies holding
conferences, hosting exhibitions, publishing journals and documents and campaigning on
myriad ocean-related issues. Having sounded out a number of coastal local authorities
earlier this year, we intend to approach all such bodies this Autumn, seeking their
signature to the Ocean Charter, a Canadian government initiative, John Prescott, Deputy
Prime Minister, signed the Ocean Charter for the UK, whilst visiting New York on World
Oceans Day (8 June).
The FORUM arranged for two pupils at the Royal Hospital School to join the Russian
Oceanographic Research Vessel "Siberyakov" on cruises in the Baltic and Eastern
Atlantic. We arranged for James Killey, to participate in the World Youth Meeting held at
EXPO'98 in Lisbon. He presented a paper on the dangers of toxic waste emissions in the
Irish Sea.
