 UKRAINE
Ukrainian's IYO activities
Ukraine is the marine state. Its southern regions are situated along
the coast of the Black Sea and Sea of Azov. Ukrainian ships are cruising the World Ocean
right up to Antarctic. Therefore, Ukraine actively supported the idea to declare the year
of 1998 as Year of the Ocean. The idea was first expressed by International Oceanographic
Commission and then confirmed by General Assembly of UNESCO in 1993. The Ukrainian
Ministry of Science and Technologies came out as an once co-ordinating the Programme and
steps dedicated to the International Year of the Ocean.
Within our limited resources these steps were:
Participation of Ukraine in the World's exhibition EXPO 98
"Ocean Heritage for Future" in Lisbon, Portugal, with an exposition
reflecting achievements of the country in the field of marine sciences and technologies.
Field studies have been carried out in the Black Sea and
Mediterranean on board of the research vessel "Horizont" from May 7 to June 5,
1998. The cruise was held in the framework of National Programme of Marine Research of the
Ministry of Ukraine on Science and Technologies, Programme of Fundamental Studies of the
World Ocean of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Programme of the National
Space Agency in the field of application of remote sensing techniques for monitoring of
marine areas and for utilization of World Ocean resources. During the visit of the
research vessel to Lisbon the crew of the ship and the scientific staff took part in the
work of International exhibition EXPO 98.
The second Ukrainian Antarctic expedition was carried out from
January 27 to May 31, 1998, on board of the research vessel "Ernst Krenkel". The
route of the expedition was Odessa Seuta Montevideo Academic
Vernadsky station in Antarctic Montevideo Odessa.
In the framework of International South Atlantic Buoy Programme
scientists of the Marine Hydrophysical Institute, Ukrainian NAS, together with scientists
from the South African Weather Bureau accomplished tests of new SVP-B drifters. The
drifters were then used to carry out time series measurements of sea water parameters and
of characteristics of near surface layer of the atmosphere in Southern Atlantic.
- Scientists of the Marine Hydrophysical Institute, Ukrainian NAS, and of the Institute of
Applied Physics of the Russian AS have performed The Black Sea Platform Experiment in
June, 1998. The objective of this experiment was to study physical processes in the upper
layer of the sea including: short surface waves and internal waves; organic
surface films; variability of short wind waves due to long surface and internal waves;
formation of slicks on the sea surface,
- International scientific and technical seminar entitled "Environmental Control
Systems" dedicated to the International Year of the Ocean has been held on the base
of the Marine Hydrophysical Institute in Sevastopol on September 21 25, 1998. As a
result of this seminar the manuscript of collected scientific papers that encompass issues
of monitoring of marine environment, design of measuring systems and devices, new marine
informational systems and technologies, remote sensing monitoring of seas and of the
oceans have been published.
- Special issue of the Marine Hydrophysical Journal has been published. The issue was
dedicated to the International Year of the Ocean. It includes a series of scientific
articles on ocean thermohydrodynamics, experimental and field studies, automation of
scientific research in the ocean.
- During International Year of the Ocean and under the initiative of the National Academy
of Sciences, an informational and advertising campaign has been realized. Memorable
pennants of the leading oceanographic institutions, various souvenirs with symbols of
International exhibition EXPO 98 has been produced and issued to propagandize basic
ideas of the Year. Presentations of leading scientists and specialists have been organized
on TV and on the radio. Detailed information about Ukrainian exposition at the exhibition
EXPO 98 dedicated to Year of the Ocean as well as articles revealing input of
Ukraine in investigations and development of ocean resources and in preservation of marine
environment have been published in the newspapers.
