National Programme for
the International Year of the Ocean
Research Cruise
Vietnam has implemented a research cruise in the Gulf of Thailand as a national
contribution to the International Year of the Ocean. The cruise, conducted by the
Center of Hydrometeorological Research of South Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City), was a
co-operative effort between IOC-WESTPAC and SEA START RC with major support from
Sida/SAREC.
Two ships of Fishery Inspections, 375 and 500 HP, were at sea from 5 - 20 of March,
1998 with 18 scientists on board. Data was collected from 76 spatial stations
regarding atmospheric temperature, visibility, weather phenomena, atmospheric pressure,
wind, and water temperature from the surface to the bottom. Samples were also taken
to analyze 21 chemical indexes, suspended and bottom biological species, biological
productivity, pesticides, and oil concentration. From four continuous stations, data
was recorded on meteorological elements, waves, currents, water temperature, and chemical
indexes.
