In a few words... The project is funded by the European Commission, within the MAST-III Programme (Marine Science and Technology). The partnership covers scientific institutions and industries coming from Italy (coordinator), France, Germany and the United Kingdom. The first phase, already financed, is devoted to the realisation of the first prototype of a benthic observatory able to operate at abyssal depths (up to 4000m) in autonomous mode collecting geophysical, geochemical and oceanographic data. The prototype will be finished in 1998. The second phase (1998-2000), approved by EU, will be devoted to the first long-term deep sea mission at 3500m water depth in Southern Tyrrhenian Sea. Contact
