Nautical Exhibition

22 May - 30 September 1998, EXPO'98, Lisbon

Introduction

Boats testify to the history and development of human capacities, dreams, explorations, wars and leisure or even scientific research. The process of knowledge and discovery of the Ocean and its deep workings, the need to face the 2lst century with the right tools and instruments, the dreams and utopian visions aroused by the seas and its denizens, are all on show in the EXPO ‘98. Thematic Pavilions. There, boats will be just one more part of the display, among many others.

Objectives

The Nautical Exhibition is an open-air exhibition of all types of vessel. The main underlying intention is to extend the animation of EXPO '98 to that area of the Exposition Ground which in physical terms has most to do with the Oceans: the Tagus Estuary, Olivais Dock and the Recreational Harbour. There visitors will be able not only to see and actually go aboard the boats, but also watch demonstrations and shows involving all types of vessel. The Nautical Exhibition also allows Participating Countries to extend their presence throughout the EXPO í98 Grounds, since they may also be represented by boats from their countries. These will act as living cultural embassies, taking the presence of the country in question far beyond the spatial limits of the pavilion.

What type of boat can take part?

The Nautical Exhibition is open to the following categories of participant:

  • Traditional work or leisure craft;
  • Scientific and research ships;
  • Historic vessels;
  • Hydroplanes;

The inner area will be for smaller or small draft vessels (preferably long-stay) whereas the outer area will be reserved for large vessels.
