In a few words...

In the framework of the International Year of the Ocean, Océantarctis is a French Polar Expedition to Antarctica, on board the famous Eric Tabarly's sailing boat, the Pen Duick III.

The Océantarctis expedition started on 9 October 1997 and will continue until May 1998. On the way back, the Pen Duick III will call in Lisbon for the opening of the World Exhibition, EXPO'98.

The objectives are:

  • To increase public awareness on the importance of oceans, especially austral seas, and also recall that the Antarctic represents 90% of the world's freshwater resources;

  • To improve the knowledge of the Antarctic thanks to a scientifc environmental program. During this expedition, scientific oceanographic research will be lead by the CNRS-CETP laboratory;

  • To bring school support to the teachers and propose action plans to the children thanks to the Internet server and the INMARSAT link;

  • To explore new unspoilt lands. Four mountain climbers will attempt for the first time the ascension of the Mont Français, peak of the Antarctic Peninsula, which has the name of Commandant Charcot's first vessel. This explorer will be commemorated all along the expedition.
