Sea your future CONTEST

Introduction

During a meeting of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC of UNESCO) in 1993, Portugal, that will host the Universal Exhibition of 1998, called 'EXPO 98: the oceans, a heritage for the future' has proposed to make this year into the year of the oceans. The IOC recommended for UNESCO to bring this request to the attention of the United Nations, which, in 1994, voted a resolution making 1998 the International Year of the Oceans.

In this context, science centres, museums and aquariums which mission it is to disseminate scientific culture to a very large public, have a significant role to play. For Europe, the association ECSITE (European Collaborative for Science, Industry and Technology Exhibitions) and its principal members, including the 'Palais de la découverte' for France, has decided to organize a contest called 'SEA YOUR FUTURE', exclusively for teenagers. The youth, grouped in teams are invited to present one or more aspects of ongoing research on a theme identified in advance.

 

In each European country, on May 22, 1998 the opening day of EXPO 98 and 'Day of the Oceans', a jury composed of scientific personalities will select the national team that will represent that country during the finals which will be held during the 'European Week for Scientific and Technological Culture (E.W.S.T.C)' (Lisbon, Portugal, 28-31 August 1998).

The winning team of each country will be allowed to go to Lisbon to represent its
nation for the final. In Lisbon, the participants will have the opportunity to gather together, to
present their projects and to attend scveral activities concerning the universal exhibition.

 

• The contest is open to teams of 5 youth, between 15 and 18 years old, of which each has to be tutored by a scientists working on the theme.
  
• Each team will report on the status of current knowledge on all or part of ongoing research on the theme.
  
• All usual communication tools can be used: posters, video, transparencies, etc. A summary of 4 pages (21x29.7 cm) will be requested. The presentation to the jury should not exceed 10 minutes.
  
• The semi finals will take place in Paris at the 'Palais de la découverte' on Friday 22 May 1998. To ensure that the teams participating in the semi finals are representatives of a region, an academy, a regional capital, etc., only teams presented by centres for scientific and technological culture, by museums and by scientific youth clubs will be allowed to contest.
  
• The documents need to be submitted on 4 May at the latest. Each document must contain, additional to the 4 page summary, the identity and coordinates of the members of the team, of the tutoring scientist, as well as the coordinates of the responsible of the organization (CSTC, museum, scientific club) that presents the team.

The French theme

Aménagement et protection du littoral : thème retenu pour le concours, en France

Espace ou territoire mal défini, mal délimité, le littoral se caractérise par des équilibres écologiques et paysagers complexes et fragiles soumis à de fortes pressions anthropiques. Son extension spatiale, vers le large ou vers le continent, est fonction des critères utilisés. Le littoral est modelé par de nombreuses activités humaines : urbanisation, agriculture, industrie, transports, tourisme etc.

Le littoral français est un des littoraux les plus attractifs en Europe. La densité de la population atteint jusqu'à 984 habitants au km2 sur les bords de la Méditerranée alors que la moyenne sur l'ensemble du territoire national s'établit à 104 habitants au km2. Le littoral concentre 37 % de la capacité touristique sur 4 % de la superficie du territoire français métropolitain. L’activité industrielle y est également importante : en France, plus de la moitié des installations industrielles, classées SEVESO sont localisées sur le littoral. Lieu de localisation de nombreuses activités, le littoral est con&onté aux évolutions très fortes de l'économie qui marquent la fin du XX' siècle. Le littoral a connu, et connaît encore, des difficultés liées à la fermeture ou à la redéfinition de sites industriels, à la mutation des ports et de certaines activités liées à la mer.

Les différents schémas d'aménagement de la plupart des littoraux &ançais restent trop axés sur la promotion du tourisme et n'ont pas véritablement conduit à des réalisations d'aménagements intégrés. Malgré les « coupures vertes », les aménagements, très artificiels, ont perturbé, parfois, l'équilibre naturel du milieu. Les écosystèmes côtiers, d'une grande complexité qui tient aux caractéristiques propres à cet l'environnement, sont de plus en plus menacés par la pression croissante de l'urbanisation et les pollutions associées.

Les connaissances scientifiques sont encore insuffisantes aujourd’hui pour apporter des solutions aux problèmes posés par le développement économique des littoraux. Le concours Sea your future doit permettre de sensibiliser les jeunes sur les enjeux des recherches en cours.
