* Background
Exploration of seas and oceans on our planet has been performed since the time the human beings appeared on Earth. The emergence and development of the states as well as civilizations has been closely connected with the progress in the seafaring. Seas have always been the source of food stock and raw material resources.
The intensity of the seas investigation permanently increases with the development of engineering basis and reached maximum in the second half of the present century. During historically observed period hearty hundreds of thousands of geographical cruises and special scientific expeditions have been made.

In the monograph it is supposed to consider exploration of the World Ocean made by every particular country with presentation of main data on expedition vessels, projects and information on them, including the most important, that made major contribution to the exploration of oceans and seas as well as systems of oceanographic data acquisition, storage, exchange and use. An involvement of the international groups into the preparation of the monograph would allow to more accurately specify the expeditions made particularly in the late last century and early the current age.
The monographs consists of 5 volumes:
Investigations of every ocean/sea are given in the context of history of expeditions and major advances and contributions regarding different countries. Individual chapters should cover the development of the procedures of oceanographic data observation, acquisition, processing, accumulation and exchange.
