IYO activities
implemented Last year, South Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) implemented the very successful 1997 Pacific Year of the Coral Reef (PYOCR) campaign in which 18 Pacific Island participated in. These 18 National Campaign Co-ordinators, together with SPREP formed the PYOCR Network. This Network is once again utilising the successful campaign activities used by the PYOCR for the IYO. Such campaign activities include the following: Theme competitions ie, national and regional poetry, artwork, dancing, music, television quizzes, etc.
The above activities are being used by the PYOCR Network to raise awareness about coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass and our shared ocean. These activities are fun, informative and participatory, all necessary ingredients for raising interest, awareness and ultimately understanding and motivation. All resource materials such as coral reef posters, handbooks, fact sheets, videos, etc., are also being used as competition prizes and give-aways. More info SPREP
