Background The EXPO'98 theme, "Oceans: A Heritage for the Future, will alert the public to the growing importance of the oceans as critical resources for sustainable development. The International Conference on Satellites, Oceanography and Society (ICSOS) will be held August 17-21, 1998 in Lisbon, Portugal under the auspices of EXPO'98. The ICSOS will celebrate the Twentieth anniversary of the Nimbus-7, Seasat, and TIROS-N satellite launches and will contribute to the 1998 International Year fo the Ocean. The goal of ICSOS is to show the importance of satellite measurements of the ocean in making life better for all.

Aim
The International Conference on Satellites, Oceanography and Society (ICSOS) aims to highlight the importance of ocean measurements from satellites, to examine how satellite observations of the ocean contribute to advancement of marine science for the benefit of society, and to encourage the development of valuable marine services made possible by satellite ocean measurements.
Abstracts
Abstracts are solicited on the following themes:
Only one abstract per speaker is permitted.
Abstract (maximum length 1 page) must be submitted by March 15, 1998 to David Halpern at the address below. Abstract should highlight how satellite measurements of the ocean contribute to society. At the top of the abstract, provide author's name, affiliation, mail address, telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail address. Notice of acceptance of abstract will be issued April 15, 1998.
Scientific Sessions and Conference Venue
Scientific sessions will be held each morning and afternoon during August 17-21, 1998 at the Centro Cultural de Belém (CCB). The venue limits the total number of participants to approximately 225 people. In order to provide maximum opportunity for interactions between scientists with varying interests, there will be no parallel sessions. ICSOS will consist of oral and poster presentations.
The CCB is located next to the Tagus River and near the Monument to the Discoveries, the 16th century Belém Tower, and the 16th century Hieronymite Monastery. The CCB includes a conference center, a performing arts center, and an exhibition center. In addition to modern conference facilities, the CCB has a full-service restaurant and cafeteria.
The Opening Ceremony and Closing Ceremony will be held at EXPO '98 the evenings of August 17 and 21. The ICSOS Banquet will be the evening of Wednesday, August 19.

It is recommended that you book hotel and airline reservations early because of the large number of people expected to attend EXPO '98.
Registration
Registration fee will be approximately US$150. Registration will be from April 15 to May 15, 1998. Registration fee must accompany registration form, and both must be submitted by May 15 to the address listed on the registration form. No registration will be permitted on site at ICSOS. If notice of cancellation is received by August 17, registration fee will be refunded. Conference materials, including name badge and abstract volume, will be distributed on July 1.
Language
English will be the language of the Conference.
