First JCOMM Scientific/Technical Symposium on Storm Surges
2 - 6 October 2007
Seoul, Republic of Korea

One of the most important objectives of the Joint Technical Commission for Oceanography and Marine Meteorology (JCOMM) of the World meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC) is to facilitate and support the delivery of the most visible outputs of the world's marine meteorological and oceanographic organizations, including warnings of gales, storms, severe tropical weather systems such as typhoons, hurricanes and tropical cyclones and other hazardous phenomena. The continuing provision of safety-related weather and oceanographic services is an absolutely fundamental priority of JCOMM.
In this context, the second session of JCOMM (JCOMM-II, September 2005, Halifax) addressed the importance of enhancing storm surge forecasting capability, and the need to complement other international efforts including the series of capacity building workshops on storm surge and wave forecasting organized by JCOMM and the WMO Tropical Cyclone Programme, and JCOMM efforts into developing ocean-related hazard warning systems.
To this end, the 1st JCOMM Scientific/Technical Symposium on Storm Surge is planned for October 2-6, 2007 in Seoul, Korea. The focus of the symposium will be similar to the very successful JCOMM scientific workshops in other related fields, including the International Workshop on Wave Hindcasting and Forecasting and the CLIMAR Workshop on Advances in Marine Climatology. The objectives of the symposium are:
- to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and information related to storm surge modelling, forecasting and hindcasting, covering both tropical and extra-tropical surges;
- to co-ordinate ongoing R&D initiatives;
- to develop appropriate input for the dynamic part of the JCOMM Guide to Storm Surge Forecasting to be published as a formal WMO Guide, emphasizing new developments;
- to provide guidance/technical support for National Meteorological Services and other national agencies providing storm surge forecasting and warning services;
- to discuss priorities for future research and development.
The symposium will take place in English only. The results of the symposium will contribute to the dynamic part of the JCOMM Guide to Storm Surge Forecasting. A JCOMM Technical Report will be produced, to include all papers, workshop presentations and posters. It is also planned to approach a scientific journal to publish a special issue containing selected papers identified by the Programme Committee.
Call for Papers
The symposium will be comprised of invited papers from selected experts, plus contributed papers and posters. It is anticipated that there will be up to 100 participants at the workshop. Invited speakers will be identified by the Programme Committee. Contributed papers are welcomed which address any aspect identified in the annotated Table of Contents for the Guide to Storm Surge Forecasting (available in text and html formats), such as theoretical aspects, numerical modelling, meteorological and oceanographic input, operational forecasting, hindcasting, storm surge climate, regional applications, and case studies of extreme storm surge phenomena. Participation is also strongly encouraged from current or potential users of such products. Requirements can range from global to regional to local, from scientific development to application in hazard warning systems.
The programme will consist of both presentation and poster sessions. Authors should indicate their preference; the final decision rests with the Program Committee. Those wishing to present a paper or poster should submit a title and abstract (100-300 words) to the addresses shown below. Each abstract should contain the author’s name, mailing address and telephone number. The deadline for receipt of abstracts is April 30, 2007. Full papers will be required by September 15, 2007; an example of a suitable paper is given at http://www.waveworkshop.org/9thWaves/Papers/Jensen.pdf .
