The Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the North-Eastern Atlantic, the Mediterranean and Connected Seas Tsunami Early Warning and Mitigation System (ICG/NEAMTWS) Secretariat (Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO) is currently undertaking appropriate steps to strengthen the visibility of the North-Eastern Atlantic, Mediterranean Tsunami Information Centre (NEAMTIC) by developing its social media presence. It has the potential to connect stakeholders and interested people regionally, nationally and globally. It further contributes to raising awareness and building resilience to tsunamis and other sea level related hazards in the NEAM region. NEAMTIC’s social media presence will contribute to the mission, vision and strategic objectives of ICG/NEAMTWS and the UN Ocean Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) and its ‘Safe Ocean’ societal outcome.
The ‘NEAMTIC Strategy Report’ that was prepared in consultation with Member States in November 2018 highlighted the need of social media presence as follows: “The popularity of social media, especially among youth, as a means of sharing information, connecting users and agencies in an interactive way cannot be ignored. NEAMTIC should create a presence on popular platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.”
The platforms will publish on a regular basis, in accordance with current activities in the NEAM region such as NEAMWave exercises, World Tsunami Awareness Day webinars, workshops and information in the case of actual tsunami events, etc.
